    The NHS Alliance - an independent body that represents NHS professionals working outside hospitals, including some GPs - is calling for doctors to take back at least some of the responsibilities they cast off in 2004. Many patients who have experienced the shortcomings of the system - such as negotiating complex phone systems or being forced to take a sick child to a dropin centre in the middle of the night - would go further and demand that, in return for their increased salaries, doctors would be available when they were most needed.
